Pond Pump

A pond pump is essential for the re-circulation of water in the pond. Unlike other pumps that only work intermittently, these have to be on continuously for months and even years. A cheap pump may do the job but it could be increasing the electricity bills much more than a good efficient pump.

A pond pump is typically submersible and electrically powered making it important that the pump is grounded just incase the waterproof casing loses it seal. Pumps are rate in gallons per hour, or gallons per minute for high yield pumps. The pump should be able to re-circulate half the volume of water in the pond in an hour. So if there is a 100 gallon pond which is very small, a 50 GPH pump will have to be used.

For water falls and fountains the pond pump has to be powerful as well as being able to move the correct amount of water. For high waterfalls and fountains it is often easier to use a separate pump to power the pond because of the increased pressure that is required to move the water to those heights.
