Pond

A pond is defined as any small body of water that retains it water all year. It can be fed by a stream, but if it continually drains it might be considered a lake depending on its size. This is a very un-poetic definition as a pond is so much more than that.

A pond is a miniature ecosystem that supports countless varieties of life. They are active parts of the environment that clean the air and provide and lush environment for fish, bugs, wildlife and plants. They can be found in the wild, filled by streams and springs and rainwater or they can be  manmade and circulated with a pump.

A pond is typically no more than five feet deep although they can be very shallow sometimes. This presents a problem in the winter, if the pond can completely freeze over it kills all the aquatic life. They provide a nice, humid microenvironment in the area as well, allowing plants that would not normally grow in certain areas to thrive.
