Koi Pond

A koi pond is an attractive addition to any area, indoors or out. They are strong, robust fish that can live up to forty years and grow quite large if their pond will allow it. Each fish needs at least 200 gallons of freshwater so these ponds can quickly become quite large.

A koi pond needs to be at least three feet deep so the fish can survive during the winter even if the surface freezes over. Too shallow and the pond will completely freeze over killing all aquatic life including the fish. Three feet is enough water for even the coldest environments, although some people prefer to heat the water ass well preventing any ice build up at all.

A koi pond can get algae blooms just like any other small body of water. These can suffocate the fish and should be controlled. While koi will eat almost any other plant in the water they avoid algae so it must be removed by other means. Beneficial bacteria’s and flocculants can be used without harming any fish.
