What is a UV pond clarifier?

A Ultra violet pond clarifier is one of the newest ways to keep a pond clean and algae free. UV light is emitted into the water which causes the algae to clump which in turn allows it to be filtered out by the pond filter. They should be connected in-line with the pump and filter and once installed are excellent at preventing a pond covered and filled with green algae. They are especially useful on ponds with fish because they do not harm them.

How do I install a pre-molded pond kit?

The first thing that should be done before any digging takes place is to measure around the pond liner. Simply place it on the ground where the pond will be and use a shovel to mark the edges. Remove the liner and dig the hole making sure that it is 2-3 inches deeper than the pond. Use sand to level the hole and insert the liner using extra sand to fill the sides and level the pond as it is slowly being filled. Make sure the pond is level! I can’t stress this enough, if the pond is not level it cannot be filled to the top and may become completely useless. Once the pond is flush with the ground, leveled and filled, the pump can be connected following the manufacturers instructions. Check the pH and if it’s between 7 and 8 it is okay to add fish. Keep clean and enjoy.

How do I keep my pond water healthy?

Keeping a pond healthy is not very difficult, especially when they are started out in the right way. The most important thing to start with is un-chlorinated water. Tap water contains chlorine (among other harmful chemicals) which will kill any fish incredibly fast. There are many ways to remove the chlorine by treating the water. Chlorine also kills the beneficial bacteria that turn the fish excrement into harmless compounds. Nitrate and ammonia levels need to be tested regularly and kept low. Once a natural balance has been found the pond will typically take care of itself for years, although a little boost of bacteria every spring can help.
